Wrapping up December

We have been extremely busy this month! A few important notes for this week:

1. Your child brought home a spelling list for this week on Friday. Our spelling test will be on Thursday.

2. Your child will not have any written homework over the break. This includes no reading calendar, however, it is my hope they continue to read!!

3. As of last week, your child has been introduced to all of the multiplication facts 0 - 10. Please be practicing facts each night. This past Friday, most of us took our 9's fact test. If your child received a 30/30 in 2 minutes, this Friday they will be taking their 3's fact test. If your child did not receive a 30/30, your child will retake the 9's this Friday.

4. This Friday, we will have a holiday party in class. If you signed up to bring something in, our room parent will be contacting you.

RAZ-KIDS and TTL4
We have begun Raz-Kids which is an online reading program. Students may access this from home at www.raz-kids.com/. Students are required to read, listen, and take a quiz for each book. They are to receive a 100% on each quiz before moving on to the next book in the program. This may require a student to reread and take the quiz more than once. Your child does not have an individual password. Our login is lpetersaw.

Type to Learn 4 is a computer program that teaches students how to type using the home row. Each child works at his/her own pace. This program tracks their progress and has fun, interactive games along the way. This past Friday, I sent home a yellow sheet with the directions on how you can access this program from home. Please let me know if you need another one.

We access both of these programs on a weekly basis in class.

Mystery Readers

Andrew's dad came in on December 6th!

Elizabeth's mom was our reader on December 13th! We got to enjoy this mystery reader with our buddy class after making 3D snowflakes together.

Directions to making a 3D snowflake can be found here: 3D paper snowflake

I hope you all have a wonderful holiday break!

Our first 5 day week in a while!

We have been awfully busy in class finishing up our character traits unit and book groups, working on wrapping up our narrative writing unit, and beginning multiplication. It is amazing what we have been able to accomplish without having a full 5 day week in over a month!

This week we will be begin a new unit in Reading Workshop. We will begin looking at non-fiction and understanding how non-fiction text features help us as readers. We'll examine titles, subtitles, pictures, captions, and bolded words. We'll work in small groups to see how these features can help us with our thinking about what the article is about and how we must use these features to navigate through a non-fiction text. We will also begin identifying main ideas of paragraphs. We'll be reading articles on bats, chimpanzees, and koalas!

In Writing Workshop, we'll begin revising and editing our small moments to eventually publish them. We have done a really nice job using a storyteller voice to put our reader right there with us in our small moment.

Multiplication will continue in math this week. We will look at a factor of 10, continue to focus on our factor of 5, understand how to multiply with factors of 10, and look at multiple step word problems. Our first "Fact Friday" went very well, with all of us mastering our factor of 2. This Friday we will all move on to a factor of 5. Be sure to continue to practice these facts daily at home!
Your child will be taking a district mandated assessment this week covering place value, comparing and ordering numbers, rounding, and adding and subtracting greater numbers. We have been continually practicing these concepts daily in class and will take this assessment on Wednesday.

We will take a brief break from word work from now until the Thanksgiving break. During this time, we will learn the basic parts to a paragraph. We will come to understand a topic sentence, body, and closing sentence. Over the next few weeks you should hopefully see your child writing in paragraphs in their Friday Letters. There will be a Friday Letter this Friday, November 22, but not one again until Friday, December 6. This has been a great way for each child to reflect over their learning during the week and use various resources in the class to assist them in writing this letter to you.

In spelling, we have been understanding our spelling words and which part of speech these words are. We have also been defining them to assist us with our sentences. I would like to see the sentences written on their weekly reviews to reflect what the words mean. Please try to have your child practice sentences with varying subjects. Try to have them begin only one sentence with "I". There will be a spelling review this Thursday, but Unit 8 will not take place until after the Thanksgiving break.

In social studies, we have been working on learning about the economy of the United States. We have focused on the various regions of the U.S., the products of these regions, products that we export and import, and understanding the difference between needs and wants. This week we'll focus on abundance, scarcity, natural resources, and interdependence, and learn about where our food comes from by researching different farms such as dairy, wheat, beef, poultry, and fish farms.

Last week each child was assigned a buddy from Mrs. Baldwin's first grade. We showed our buddies the fun, interactive website www.abcya.com/.This past week, our buddies spent time with us on Raz-Kids. They listened to us read a third grade text, while they read us a text from their account. Please feel free to put your child on Raz-Kids at home. We will go on this site once a week to help enhance our reading comprehension.

This week we will learn various aspects of Microsoft Word and use our USB drives for the first time!

We have been enjoying our weekly mystery readers! I may have to change up some of the clues...if your child has been asking you random questions, such as what was your first job, or your shoe size, it's because they're trying to be able to figure out if you're the reader!

Happy Halloween

Hard to believe October is already coming to a close! I am truly impressed with how much we have learned and accomplished in the first two months of the year. I have thoroughly enjoyed meeting with all of you and have found our conversations to be very productive. Please continue to contact me at any time with any questions or concerns you may have.

This week includes:
  • the NED show on Tuesday morning! We will enjoy a character education program that embodies many of the traits we have with PRIDE.
  • a Halloween party on Thursday!!!
  • the book fair preview Thursday and time to purchase books on Friday!
Reading Workshop
This week students will analyzing a chapter of Charlotte's Web independently and we will be discussing the changes we have seen in Wilbur. We will also be meeting in our small reading groups this week. Our focus will be on character traits and textual evidence.

Writing Workshop
We will learn how to nurture our seed ideas that we want to take through the writing process. We will investigate various leads and focus on using a storyteller voice instead of a summarizer voice.

Math
We have begun exploring multiplication concepts. The goal this week is to introduce underlying concepts of multiplication. We will understand multiplication as repeated addition, use arrays, learn properties of multiplication, and write multiplication stories. Look for a review packet of these concepts to come home mid-week. This packet is meant for you to support your child's learning at home.

Social Studies
The students have been working on a landform dictionary in class. We are using the computers to define a variety of landform terms. This week we will complete this work and begin a closer look at the geography of the United States. Our focus will be on the major landforms of the US and how the landforms impact population.

We continue to enjoy our mystery readers every Friday. Here's Connor's dad and brother from October 18th.

The 3 and a half day week...

Hello families! I hope you all have been enjoying this picture perfect Fall weekend! My family went pumpkin picking and spent an afternoon at Jiminy Peak's Fall Festival!
This upcoming week is a short one, due to the holiday and a half day on Thursday, however we certainly will make the most of the time we have together!

This week in...
Reading Workshop...
we will continue our character study. We are learning how we can formulate opinions about the characters we read, however, we must back our opinions with textual evidence. We have been reading from Charlotte's Web by E.B. White as a class. As we've been reading, we've been realizing how much depth each character has and we have been surprised to find that Wilbur really isn't a likeable pig based on his personality.

Writing Workshop...
we will learn how to edit our writing as we're writing and how this is an important skill when we write in all disciplines. We will also choose a seed idea. This seed idea will be a small moment that we will work on and take it through the writing process.

Math...
we will look at subtracting greater numbers with regrouping and subtracting across zeroes. We will also learn a new problem solving strategy: drawing a picture.

Science...
we will look at the parts of a flower and closely observe how our flowers on our plants change as it continues through its life cycle. This week we may even be able to learn about pollination and get the chance to pollinate our flowers!

Social Studies...
we hope to discuss continental drift and begin looking at the different landforms that cover our globe.

Dictionary Skills...
we have been learning how to navigate through a dictionary using guide words. We will begin looking words up to learn their part of speech.

I look forward to our upcoming conferences over the next three weeks. We have a lot to cover in our 20 minutes together! Thank you for your continued support.

This week's mystery reader was David's mom!!!
